Meet Reverend AntiChrist

He's Jesus Christ. No, he's the Apostle Paul. Wait a minute--he's now the new AntiChrist! Jose Luis de Jesus Miranda now bears a tattooed "666" on his forearm and claims to be the AntiChrist. According to this fascinating Newsweek article (look here), Jose has over 100,000 followers and boasts a multi-million dollar ministry that spans radio, television, the internet, and over 300 congregations (his website here).

Jesus warned us of such men in Matthew 24:24--" For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if [it were] possible, they shall deceive the very elect." Jose, knowing the Bible very well, has already answered this charge (see defense here).

What fascinates me is just how popular men like this can become in such a short time--and how easily people can be duped by them. When I went to England a few years back, I witnessed to a man who was apart of such a cult. This particular man worshiped the "Christ" in the person of "O-O-Aboo". He was the 2nd coming of Christ and had shown many signs and wonders to prove who he was. The Lord really blessed my discussion with him even though it ended with him shouting at me and the crowd, "This man is the AntiChrist...the spirit of the AntiChrist is upon him!!!" It was a bizarre encounter but one that has forever given me a heart to reach out to those involved with cults.

Lewis and Freud Debate God

I few years back I saw a really good show on PBS called "The Question of God." It was based upon a book by the same title, written by Dr. Armand Nicholi. The contents of both pit the intellectual arguments for and against the existence of God, as argued by both Sigmund Freud (against) and C.S. Lewis (for). The end result is a fascinating debate between two of the most influential figures of the 20th century (read one review here).

The book is really hard to put down. Dr. Nicholi does a remarkable job of putting the arguments side by side throughout the book. It is the closest thing to a real debate that could be possible. I must say that Lewis holds many advantages in the debate: (1) He lived a little after Freud and had more time to read and answer his objections. (2) He himself was an atheist for the first 30 years of his life--thus, he knew and had sympathy for the atheists' best arguments. (3) He had read much more theology and philosophy than Freud. Though Freud is no intellectual lightweight here, he didn't have some of the benefits of Lewis in these areas.

Though the book tries to be objective to both sides of the debate, I came away feeling more confident of my own faith. Nicholi does a good job of communicating to us the "weightiness" of the subject matter. If one side is true and the other false then the consequences are considerable. As I weighed the consequences of Freud's arguments, it became clear to me that his view only leads to despair, lawlessness, and futility. Nicholi, in a very non-postmodern tone, argues that these points of view are "mutually exclusive--if one is right, the other must be wrong." Though the book and video seek to be neutral on the subject, Nicholi seems to believe that a conclusion needs to be made. Both Lewis and Freud saw it in this light and so should the viewer (reader). They are absolutely right! It was refreshing to read a non-religious book that actually gets that important point.

News Flash: Albert Mohler Forced To Take Off His Suit!!

God works in mysterious ways. I have always insisted that the suit and tie was invented by demonically inspired men who think that being uncomfortable is cool. Well, it just so happens that one of my heroes of the faith, the ever suit and tie wearing Dr. Albert Mohler, has finally been forced to take off his suit--he actually traded it in for a gown.

Some of you may already know, but it seems that Mohler came pretty close to death over the Christmas holidays. You can read about his medical crisis here (article here). His article on his ordeal is worth the read. Thankfully, he is now okay. But according to his own testimony, he came awfully close to death. Being forced to wear a hospital gown was very humbling for a man who has more suits than any human being alive.

Rumor has it, that his excessive wearing of suits actually led to his medical condition. Either way, we are grateful to have him back in good health. Perhaps, he will now be less inclined to wear suits.

Colts Going To The Super Bowl!!!!!!!

HOLY COW!!! The greatest game ever!!!! The Colts had the biggest comeback in either an AFC or NFC Championship game (in all of NFL history). Peyton Manning brought his team back from a 21-3 deficit and won the game with a last minute scoring drive. Congratulations to Tony Dungy, Peyton Manning and the boys!!!!

The Colts play on Saturday in a huge game against the Baltimore Ravens. There will be much hype over the fact that the Colts are playing in their former host city. Peyton Manning will get yet another opportunity to define his great career. Can he win a big playoff game and put the Colts into position to make it the Superbowl? The Colts need a great game from him and hopefully this will be the case on Saturday. My dream of a Brady-Manning duel, for the AFC Championship, at the RCA Dome is on the line. We'll have to wait and see. Go Colts!!!!

Charles Queen, Billy Graham, and the Word of God

It seems that our good pastor friend, Dr. Charles Queen from Immanuel Baptist Church, has posted yet another article attacking historic, Biblical Christianity. This time he goes after the Authority and Inerrancy of Scripture (article here). It's just another confirmation about just how far out he really is (read one of his previous articles here).

I was not surprised that Dr. Queen decided to use a quote from Dr. Billy Graham. I was already familiar with the quote but I have always given Graham the benefit of the doubt due to his long history of being faithful to the Biblical Gospel in both his writings and teachings. However, I have been rather disappointed in Graham in some of his "less than direct" statements that he sometimes makes in interviews. I firmly believe that Graham is sincerely orthodox in his views on God, man, and the judgement of sin, but sometimes he forsakes the clarity of truth just for the sake of a "broader tent."

In fact, it's no secret, that Graham has actually been highly controversial in his ministry in regards to issues like Inerrancy, Ecumenicalism, and Politics. There is no short supply of criticisms of his ministry from numerous Christians. Some are fair, while others are not. One of the fairest (and I believe accurate) criticisms was brought to us by Iain Murray, originally delivered at Grace Community Church (now available for purchase through Banner of Truth). It is both gracious and loving towards Graham, while at the same time, very forthright in it's criticisms of Graham's sometimes unfortunate comments and positions. I believe that it is a must read for those who have been confused by some of Graham's more controversial areas of ministry (see review of another relevant book by Murray here).

It's a shame that a liberal like Dr. Queen would find theological comfort in someone like Graham. That is unfortunate. But it does give us even more reason to hold fast to the truth of God's word and not upon the foolish and fallen thinking of man. Even someone like Graham can be fallible--that's a good lesson for all of us!

Devotional: Think On What Is Lovely

Think on what is Lovely.

Our world is filled with ugliness. The ugliness caused by sin, caused by rebellion, by hatred of God and His truth. Ugliness caused by the perversion of God's goodness. Destroyed relationships, ruined marriages, are ugly. Lives marred by drug abuse and alcoholism---ugly.

Beautiful women living in constant debauchery, adultery and fornication--ugly. Abortion as a birth control method, greed ruining lives. Ugly. We cannot avoid seeing the ugliness that comes from the perversion of sin. But, we can refrain from wallowing in it. We can limit our exposure to it to that which God's calling in our lives demands: that is, the person who is called, and gifted, to face the ugliness of the world with regularity will be given the grace to handle the task. But it is the willful exposure of one's heart and mind to unnecessary ugliness that makes no sense. The more exposure we have, the less we will be appalled and repelled by it. "Think on what is lovely." In the context, this is not simply a command to enjoy the beauty of goodness, of holiness, of what is pleasing in God's creation. It is a part of the entire string of commands, and truly, we are given a good idea of what "lovely" here means by seeing it in light of what has come before.

God's creation is beautiful when it is in harmony with its Creator. The Christian who stares at the grandeur of creation can do so with an added level of depth that the one who remains in rebellion against God cannot. That which is righteous is lovely; that which is holy is pleasing to God, and to those who are at peace with God. When we are purposefully seeking to discipline our thinking, our minds, we will know when we are indulging the flesh and thinking upon that which is not pleasing to God, which reverberates with the rebellious tones of the world. We should truly seek to be sensitive to the Spirit in recognizing when things are lovely, of a good report, and when they are stained with the revolting stench of the world.

Live From Michigan

Well, we made it to Michigan in one piece. I got to go pheasant hunting yesterday and it was an absolute blast (so to speak). I shot 2 1/2 birds--all roosters. How is that possible? Well, my friend and I shot one of the birds at the same time. It thoroughly died. I'll post the pictures once we get back to Kentucky.

Please notice the above picture--study it closely. Believe it or not, I actually saw one of these live and in person. Who knew that there were rednecks in Michigan. They used pop cans however--they must have been Baptists.

I am currently at the Great Lakes Chocolate and Coffee Company drinking coffee and putting down some of their famous truffles. Don't be too jealous.

I'm blogging live from the land of grains. Indiana is my native land and I enjoy coming back a few times a year. The day after Christmas my family and I will be heading up to Sturgis, Michigan to visit some friends of ours. We'll be treated to lots of chocolate and coffee (our friends are the owners of the Great Lakes Chocolate and Coffee Company). There's nothing like a big cup of their freshly roasted coffee and a plate of truffles. It's what dreams are made of.

I'm also going to do a little pheasant hunting while I'm up there. I always look forward to this time of the year when we can relax and reflect a bit. Just pray that my belly doesn't enjoy this too much!

Colts Win Big Game

Well the Colts looked like their old selves last night. They dismantled the Bengals 34-16. Dwight Freeney had a huge night with 3 sacks and 3 forced fumbles. Marvin Harrison and Peyton Manning showed why they own so many NFL records and are both future Hall of Famers.

While their victory was impressive--the problems still linger. Of course, the Bengals are no San Diego Chargers and the dreaded playoff questions are still screaming at them. Manning has been able to shed a few monkeys off his back in the last couple of years, but one monkey remains--they haven't made it to a Superbowl yet. This final hurdle has yet to be conquered.

I wanted to highly recommend a couple of teachings from Dr. John MacArthur. He recently preached at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary during their chapel services (download page here). The "Tale of Two Sons" sermon was, by far, the best teaching on the prodigal son that I have ever heard. Also, his teaching entitled, "Christ, the Head of the Church" was also excellent. Check out his daily blog sometime as well. He's got some great articles there.

Why Theology Really Matters

The following article was written by a local "pastor" in Frankfort, Kentucky. He pastors Immanuel Baptist Church:

John 14:6 has Jesus saying, "No one comes to the Father except through me" and Acts 4:12 says "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved." This has often been interpreted by Christians to deny the validity of the God experience of people of other faiths. These texts can however be read differently. To declare that salvation is found only in Jesus or it is only through Jesus that one can come to the Father is to state what is true for Christians who trust in Jesus; it does not say what is true for people of other faith traditions.

Christians can affirm God's particular revelation to them in the person of Christ, while concurrently acknowledging the authenticity of the God experience of people of other religions. If the language of Christians seems to be exclusionary it is because it is the language of devotion, which is the language of exaggeration and overstatement. When I say that my wife is "the most beautiful woman in the world" I am not denying the beauty of other women; I am not stating something that is factual or verifiable, rather I am speaking subjectively, devotionally, what is true for lovers. Lovers of Jesus can utilize such language.

When this kind of language is crystallized into doctrine then it spawns elitist, exclusionary version of Christianity that denies the experience of other people; it says we are right and you must conform to our beliefs. There is a particularism to Christian faith, but a healthy particularism is not exclusivist, it recognizes that people of other faith traditions can know God and experience God's healing, transforming love.

Mars Hill's New Website

Mar's Hill Church, in Seattle, has recently launched their new website. It really is a first-rate site with lots to look at and great downloads.

Mark Driscoll is currently teaching a series called, "Vintage Jesus". I've listened to a few teachings and have been very impressed.

By the way, the protest never happened. I guess that the protesters had better things to do. Actually, Mark met with some of them and assured them that he would "chill out" on some of his language (read here). I'll personally miss some of his common phrases like "chickified" but that's just my warped sense of humor (read his reflections here). So much for a sense of humor on the part of the feminists. We'll have to pray for that one.

Mark Driscoll Takes Some Heat

It seems that there is a protest, set for December 3, at Mark Driscoll's Ballard Campus Church. The protesters are part of a group, in Seattle, called People Against Fundamentalism. It seems that the people against fundamentalism are fundamentally opposed to those who have strong views and wish that others believed like they do. They will not tolerate intolerance of any sort (download here).

I am personally not tolerant of those who are intolerant of those that practice and exhort others to be intolerant--it's all just very intolerable.

Venison Galore

I had a lot of fun, this year, harvesting some venison at Cedarmore. My daughters have even helped out a bit. So far, we have processed 4 does for the season. This will probably be it for me--unless I happen to take one bow hunting later on.

If you process venison correctly and use good recipes, then it can be a wonderful treat. Many people have had bad experiences with venison because of it's "gaminess". This could be for many reasons, but probably because the right recipe wasn't used.

I have a few interesting stories to tell this hunting season. One involves an angry momma doe and the other involves a very tired momma doe. More on that later.

More Goodies From John Frame

At the beginning of the year, it was brought to my attention, that John Frame was coming out with a new Introduction To Systematic Theology. After reading his Doctrine of God book, a few years back, (and since rereading and often referring back to it), I was eagerly anticipating this particular release. I'm pleased to say that I finally received it and I am a happier man for it!

I really appreciate Frame on a personal level. I've had the opportunity and privilege to hear him lecture a few times. I appreciate his humility in dealing with theology and his desire for more charity in theological studies.

In the upcoming weeks, I would like to do some posts on the book--perhaps, even doing a post per chapter. I'm not quite sure how I'll do it. But he's provoked me to want to flush out a few subjects that I have been quite interested in for some time now. One, in particular, has to do with the Biblical notion of the Millennium. Though Frame offers a different perspective on this subject than what I subscribe to, he states some interesting things that are worth exploring. This is a subject, that I believe, that the Reformed tradition has dropped the ball on. More on that later.

The Colts Beat The Pats!!!!

Last night was one of the best games that I have ever seen. The Indianapolis Colts dismantled the New England Patriots 27-20, for the second straight year, in Foxboro. No small feat for anybody. They are now the only undefeated team left, in the NFL, at 8-0. The New England demons have officially been exorcised--at least for regular season games!

Now comes all of the talk and hype. Will the Colts go undefeated? Can they finally win a Superbowl? The answer to all of these questions is--who knows?! Anything can happen in the NFL. Who would have thought that the Steelers would win a Superbowl one year and, perhaps, not even make the playoffs the next year?

I was very impressed with Manning and his offense. But their defense stepped up in a way that made them great. They have all of the makings of a Superbowl team--not just to win one, but to have a dynasty. If they can win one this year, then I have no doubt that Manning will win more before he retires. But they have to get the playoff monkey off of their backs. That is the final piece to the championship puzzle. GO COLTS!!!!!!!

White Dissects Emir Caner's Sermon

James White does a great job of showing why most arguments against the Doctrine of Election fall flat (stream it here).

I am continuously amazed by what great lengths folks will go to deny this doctrine. There are some pretty good alternatives to the traditional Calvinistic teachings on this subject, but I rarely hear the better arguments put forward.

What Emir Caner and Jack Graham argue for here goes against the very basics of the Bible. I don't mean to be condescending towards them, but their arguments are so weak that I can barely believe that they have studied basic theology. When I hear comments like, "God doesn't send people to hell for their sins...just for refusing the Gospel" then I simply can't believe that have seriously thought through the subject--let alone actually engaging others who hold to the Reformed position.

Colts Still Undefeated!

The Colts have started yet another season with a 7-0 record. That's only been done one other time in NFL history. I was amazed by how easy it was for Peyton Manning to march down the field against the Denver Broncos on Sunday. Even though their defense looked pretty bad in the game (as it has looked all season), I was encouraged to see their offense dominate a good defense like that.

If the Colts can go into New England and beat the Patriots on their home-field next week, then there may be talk of an undefeated season again.

Let's just hope that they can peak at the right time this season.

The Unpopular Doctrine of Hell

A good blog post, on the unpopular doctrine of hell, can be found here. It's interesting to see how people can try to smooth over the doctrines that they don't either like or understand fully. This furthers the case (and need) for systematic theology. It's important to understand how all of the doctrines of the Bible fit together.

I would argue for the "necessity" of hell as it relates to fallen humanity, God's glory, and justice. Without the Doctrine of Hell, the entire Bible becomes unnecessary. Christ's death on the cross becomes unnecessary. It's a necessary part, to the broader picture, of redemptive history. Without it, the Gospel makes absolutely no sense.

Great Tim Keller Resources

I want to highly recommend a great teaching by Tim Keller. You can download it here. It deals with our religious affections and how we always give ourselves to something--even when we don't give our passions to Christ. The Lord spoke to me in a powerful way through this rather short, but meaty, sermon on Colossions 3:1-14.

Keller continues to amaze me. He has a rather unique style of delivering Biblical truth. He delivers his messages in a conversational style that feels like you are just sitting and chatting with him. I've been very impressed with his insights and faithfulness to the word. Here's another link to more teachings (link here). Enjoy!

Colts On A Roll...Kind Of

Well the Colts go into their "bye" week undefeated and without many significant injuries. There is only one problem--they are not even close to playing good football. Winning games-yes, playing good solid football, no! They almost lost to a very sad team last Sunday. The Tennessee Titans are far from being a good team. But the Colts managed to almost get beat at home!

The best team in the league right now, is by far, the Chicago Bears. They are playing some unbelievable football right now! They aren't just winning games--they are killing teams. I would love to see the Colts play them in the Superbowl. It would be what dreams are made of. Except for the fact that the Colts would probably lose. They've got a long way to go before they can win at that level.

The Debate That Never Was

As if I needed another reason not to like Jerry Falwell and the "fightin fundies" at Liberty University. The much anticipated, but never expected, debate on Calvinism has been officially cancelled. Ergun and Emil Caner were supposed to debate James White and Tom Ascol at Thomas Road Baptist Church on October 16, 2006. White had warned his listeners not to book any flights or make travel plans for it--he had a bad feeling about the whole thing to begin with. After reading some of Ergun's childish comments earlier in the year, I was not surprised at all.

You can download the full email exchange between Ergun Caner and James White. It is available in a PDF download. I have been carefully following the exchanges and I can honestly say that I am shocked. Ergun Caner has to be one of the most immature and thoughtless persons that I have run across in a long time. To think that he is a President of a major Southern Baptist Seminary is scarey to say the least.

James White has a long history of scholarly debates to his credit. Every debate that I have heard him do has been done carefully, thoughtfully, and with respect. I don't always agree with him, but I respect him for how he handles himself in debate situations. He's the best debater that I have ever heard. It's the "content" of what he says that so impresses me, not so much in his ability to persuade.

Oh well, perhaps we'll finally get that indepth Romans 9 debate some other day. I have yet to hear a good or even semi-exegetical argument against the traditional Reformed understanding of it. We'll have to continue to wait for that one!

Piper and Driscoll Exchange a Few Emails

2006 Desiring God Conference

The 2006 Desiring God Conference has concluded. I thoroughly enjoyed the conference and thought that they did an excellent job of putting it on. You can download the free audio teachings here.

It's hard to say what the highlights were. The worship times were great and so were all of the speakers. Tim Keller and David Wells really stood out for me. Though the other speakers were great, their messages probably connected with me more. John Piper was excellent as always, but I had already heard him speak on his topic many times before. I really like Keller's conversational style of teaching and how he used some of Martyn Lloyd Jone's insights into our present culture. Wells did a great job of relating the truth of scripture with where the church is now in our society.

Mark Driscoll was also impressive. There was a lot of buzz about him being there. Piper even made the comment that no other speaker had ever gotten him into more trouble than Driscoll. People were somewhat concerned about Piper inviting him to his conference. If you have ever read any of Driscoll's books, or heard him speak, then you might understand why. I just got done reading his new book, "Confessions of a Reformission Rev." I personally don't have any problem with Driscoll's style, though I did disagree with some things in his book. I'll try and post a review of it later. Overall, it was a pretty inspirational book, especially being apart of a new church plant myself.

Colts Win Their Fourth Straight

It ended up being a crazy game, but the Colts pulled off another victory on the road. They are now in first place in the AFC South and one of only 3 teams left who are undefeated.

As their coach said afterwards, they are not where they want to be in many areas. If they want to win a superbowl, then they have much to improve on. But it doesn't hurt to start the season with 4 straight wins. Go Colts!!!

Christianity Today on Reformed Theology

Christianity Today wrote a surprisingly good and fair article on the subject of the explosion of Reformed Theology in today's churches--particularly as it relates to Southern Baptists (see article here). As Reformed Theology has made a dramatic comeback in the last 50 years, many have taken notice. Many who once were opposed to such a movement have now seen the "good fruit" of those who claim Reformed principles. They have found partners in Biblical Inerrancy, a reverent and high view of God, and even, in the purposes of evangelism. What has led to such a resurgence?

Much of it can be traced to men like Martyn Lloyd-Jones and J.I. Packer. To publishers like Banner of Truth and their bringing back into print the Puritans and many historical "reformed" figures. Much of this resurgence actually started as a response to liberalism, the charismatic movement, and the seeker-sensitive churches. Where there is a lack of doctrinal certainty, there typically arises a hunger for it.

Perhaps it could be best stated that the post-modern culture needs assurity. Much in today's evangelical world offers doctrine that is shallow at best and heretical at it's worst--it's all mixed together in a confusing ball that brings about uncertainty and shallowness. When one of the prominent leaders in the evangelical church recently stated that "the evangelical church is a diverse bunch--from Benny Hinn to R.C. Sproul" you know that there's considerable confusion in what it actually means to be evangelical. By looking at the principles brought back by the Protestant Reformation, the church as a whole, both the Arminian and the Calvinistic, can greatly benefit.

Colts Start Season With Two Wins

It's obvious that the Colts are starting the season off the right way (they are 2-0)--yet they have some significant problems. One of those problems has to do with their defense--it hasn't looked all that sharp so far. Dwight Freeney has gotten off to a slow start and the secondary doesn't look all that good. Offensively, the line is not looking as good as it should be. Peyton is rushed way too much. Their running backs aren't getting good holes. Great teams have great linemen--just look at the Steelers!

How's Peyton doing? He only threw for 400 yards last Sunday against Houston. They should probably consider replacing him. Just joking. GO COLTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

G. Campbell Morgan Back In Print

The Westminster Pulpit by G. Campbell Morgan is back in print at a reduced price (see here). Since first reading Morgan at Bible College, I have always wanted to own this series. Since it was out of print for awhile, the price was dramatically higher than what I was willing to spend.

His sermons are some of the best that I have ever read. If C.H. Spurgeon is the Prince of Preachers, then Campbell is surely the "Prince of Expositors". Many evangelicals from many traditions have noted his influence in how they teach the Bible. He lays out the text of scripture in a very clear and easy way, while, at the same time, communicating the gravity and depth of the passage. He's also the man responsible for bringing the great Martyn Lloyd-Jones to Westminster Chapel after hearing him preach. Another good reason to appreciate him!

My lovely wife bought the volumes for me and they have now arrived. I am a happier man because of it!

Prosperity Gospel Makes Cover of Time

Great article here covering Time's recent cover story about the Prosperity Gospel. Things are changing on the heresy front!

I've noticed a trend in the Prosperity Gospel and other forms of heretical teaching in the last 6 years or so. The old way of teaching is passing and the new is emerging in its place. The new "Prosperity-Lite" teachings are emerging from the likes of Joel Osteen and Joyce Meyer, while the older order of the Oral Roberts and the Robert Tilton's are passing. You could say that the user friendly philosophy of many mega-churches have combined with the older Pentecostal prosperity teachings of the past. Its Oral Roberts meets Bill Hybels---or something like that.

The Time article revealed many disturbing things about this segment of the Christian church. Whats so disturbing about this movement is how it is adapting to our current culture. It has broadened its appeal by toning down the message a bit. The image of the sweaty preacher walking up and down the stage yelling out a blatant Prosperity message is out--now we have a smiling and gentle preacher encouraging you to "find God's best" for your life. The heart of the message is still the same, but the style of delivering it has changed.

Here Come The Colts!

Well it's here: The Indianapolis Colts kick off their season against the New York Giants on Sunday night. Halfway through the game, they look pretty good. Despite losing Edgerrin James on the off season, they still look like the most explosive team in the league.

The big question of the season is this: can they win when it really matters? Will they peak in the playoffs this year, or will they peak at the wrong time, like last year? They have everything that they need to win a championship. Now it just comes down to execution. It will be fun to watch. Go Colts!!!!!

Dr. Bruce Ware to Speak at Mars Hill Church

I was pleased to see that Dr. Bruce Ware will be speaking at Mars Hill Church next Spring, 2007 (see details of conference here). I probably learned more from Ware, sitting in his classroom in one semester, than I learned my whole life reading books on theology. He has a talent for presenting difficult material in a concise and easy way.

It's good to see a church like Mars Hill invite someone like Dr. Ware, and it's equally nice to see him accept such an invitation. Though Ware is much more conservative in church practice than Mark Driscoll, they both share a very high view of who God is. Ware is my second favorite writer dealing with Theology Proper (next to, of course, Dr. John Frame). The way that I see God will never be the same after having him for a professor, Sunday school teacher, and friend.

Feeling the Frustration

A rather blunt, insightful, and comical diatribe against the feminization of the PCUSA can be found here (article here). It's amazing to me how people, who call themselves Christian, can come up with such nonsense about critical doctrines like the Trinity.

Yet another example of allowing culture to dictate your theology, rather than allowing God's revelation to guide and instruct us.

Another good reason to emphasis strong male leadership within the local church. When the men are strong in the church, the marriages are strong, and the life of the church is put into proper order. I've yet to meet a woman who didn't want their husband to be a strong leader in the home and in their church. The PCUSA ceased from being Christian a long time ago. Time to jump ship!

I wanted to give credit where credit is due. If you've ever wondered where I get most of my goofy album covers, then here you go. Purgatorio has all of my favorite old Christian album covers, along with many other oddities. It's Divine Vinyl section is great!

Marc Heinrich does a good job of showing off our Christian "subculture" in all of it's weirdness. It's a rather unique Christian website. Check out the left-hand section for all of his various categories. My favorites are his "Emerging" section and his "T-Shirt" category. Great stuff!

Anderson Cooper: Dispatches From The Edge

Anderson Cooper's book "Dispatches From The Edge" was one of the most honest and eye-opening books that I have read in a long time (see brief review here). I actually listened to the book on CD (thank God for libraries, I could never afford to buy such things). Why was it honest and eye opening? It left me utterly depressed and empty...that's why. Let me explain.

As Cooper writes about his experiences in covering some of the major stories of our time (war in Iraq, Asian tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, etc.), he reflects on his own life and the personal tragedies that he has experienced,--namely, the death of his father when he was 10 and the horrific suicide of his older brother when he was 20. He offers no conclusions, or solutions to the pain that he has experienced, nor does he attempt to make sense of the world around him--he just reports and reports and reports. That's his job. That's what he gets paid millions for--reporting what he sees in the world. He just happened to throw in his own personal tragedies as well. Though some reviewers deplored this side of the book, I thought that it was highly appropriate and added significant depth to the book.

It was honest because Cooper doesn't claim to have real answers. He simply reports. It was eye opening because it's a good snap shot into our culture. They know what's around them and they know what's in their own life (and heart) but they know that they have no answers to life's toughest questions. The best you can do is give someone a pat on the back and say, "hang in there buddy." Or as Anderson tells them, "it will be all right." Hang in there for what? What if it's doesn't end all right?

It reminds me of how I felt when I saw the movie "Remains of the Day." Great movie. But it leaves you totally depressed. There's no happy ending, there's no resolution--just pain and regrets.

The reality is that this is life without Christ. Without Justification by Faith and God's grace in our lives, there are no real answers. Without the understanding that our world is fallen and that Christ redeemed it for His glory, we can never truly have meaningful answers to the sin, suffering, and misery that we see in the world. We can only look at it, report on it, and move on.

Modern Worship and Theology

I tend to prefer contemporary worship to traditional worship. Though I did attend a Reformed Baptist Church for over a year, I didn't necessarily like the more traditional style of worship. At John MacArthur's church in California (Grace Community Church), I did have some positive experiences with a more traditional style of worship. But it's not everyday that you go to a church like that with a world class choir. It was majestic and beautiful. I could worship like that all of the time.

I'm convinced that much of the contemporary worship is geared more towards women. As the above picture suggests, many of the lyrics are shallow, repetitive, and sound more like love songs that you would hear from a teen boy band. Maybe that's a bit too cynical, but I must admit that I've been disappointed lately with much of the new worship music.

Most of the modern songs don't reflect meaningful theology. There are a few exceptions however. One new song that seems to be catching on is "In Christ Alone." I feel like I get saved everytime I sing it. Why? Because it's meaty with good theology. Here's the link to the lyrics (lyrics here).

Mark Driscoll And Our Culture

I've been listening to Mark Driscoll lately to try and get a feel for him and his theology. He's a rather unique blend: A self professed "emerging, charismatic, reformed, Baptist" who is theologically and Biblically conservative, yet liberal in his manner of church style. I've heard many good things about him and a handful of criticisms. All in all, I typically like what he has to say.

If you have any insights into Driscoll and the Acts 29 Network of Churches then I'd love to hear about them. What I typically try to determine is this: Is this a movement of the flesh or of the Spirit?

I will be possibly (hopefully) attending the Desiring God National Conference in September. Driscoll is one of the speakers there. I am looking forward to hearing from guys like John Piper and David Wells. We'll have to wait and see if it works out. The lineup of speakers are great and the subject matter is highly relevant for our time. Please pray that I'll be able to attend!

Charles Spurgeon Honeymoon Suite

A few years back, my wife and I got to go to the Spurgeon Suite (at the Honeymoon Mansion) in New Albany, Indiana. It ended up being the nicest Bed and Breakfast that my wife and I have ever got to stay at.

It's hard to believe that there is a honeymoon suite named after Charles Spurgeon. There's a huge jacuzzi (see picture above) in a big room--complete with mirrored ceilings and walls. There are six marble columns that surround the jacuzzi. There are two rooms in the suite--a big bedroom and the jacuzzi room.

Spurgeon rocks! And so does his honeymoon suite. It's perfect for a romantic get away with your spouse. There's also a collection of Spurgeon writings in the jacuzzi room. The closest thing to heaven that you will ever get! I highly recommend it. I noticed, however, that the current owners have it on Ebay (see here). Hopefully, if someone new buys it, they will keep the name Charles Spurgeon.

Week #3 is in the history books at our Crossings at Cedarmore Camp. It was the largest week so far with over 380 campers on the main campus. The Lord did a great work in the hearts of the kids. Spiritually speaking, it was probably the best week so far this summer.

It's amazing what kind of fun you can have with dirt and some water. One of the highlights for the kids is our Slurgefest. It's a cheap way of having alot of fun. I'll probably try it out next week.

Week 2 of Camp Concludes

Week 2 of our Crossings at Cedarmore camp is history. God certainly did a great work this week. It's amazing what happens when you love and hang out with kids all week. God changes them and He also changes us.

It seems that our new lake and horse-trail have been very successful. The kids love the horses. There's something almost majestic about a horse. They are alot of fun. I've really enjoyed just going down at night and hanging out with them. Camp is exhausting, but alot of fun at the same time. The true "fruit" of camp will never be fully known in this lifetime. We just can trust God that there will be.

If God had willed it, each of us might have entered heaven at the moment of conversion. It was not absolutely necessary for our preparation for immortality that we should tarry here. It is possible for a man to be taken to heaven, and to be found meet to be a partaker of the inheritance of the saints in light, though he has but just believed in Jesus. It is true that our sanctification is a long and continued process, and we shall not be perfected till we lay aside our bodies and enter within the veil; but nevertheless, had the Lord so willed it, He might have changed us from imperfection to perfection, and have taken us to heaven at once. Why then are we here?

Would God keep His children out of paradise a single moment longer than was necessary? Why is the army of the living God still on the battle-field when one charge might give them the victory? Why are His children still wandering hither and thither through a maze, when a solitary word from His lips would bring them into the centre of their hopes in heaven? The answer is: they are here that they may "live unto the Lord," and may bring others to know His love. We remain on earth as sowers to scatter good seed; as ploughmen to break up the fallow ground; as heralds publishing salvation. We are here as the "salt of the earth," to be a blessing to the world. We are here to glorify Christ in our daily life. We are here as workers for Him, and as "workers together with Him." Let us see that our life answereth its end. Let us live earnest, useful, holy lives, to "the praise of the glory of His grace." Meanwhile we long to be with Him, and daily sing:

Blobbing Is Fun, Unless You Hurt Yourself

Well, I survived my first Crossings at Cedarmore camp. We worked long days to get the camp ready to go and our first week went off well. I got launched off of the Super Blob a few days before the camp opened. We were guinea pigs of sorts to see how the blob and the zip lines would work. As you can see from the picture, I caught some nice air.

The problem was, I didn't lean forward enough, so when I landed--it was flat on my back. It felt like someone smacked me across my lower back as hard as they could. It hurt pretty bad. Anyways, we worked those issues out and we now know what to do and what not to do--after about 5 days my back stopped hurting.

I will attempt to post about how the camps are going. There isn't much time in the day to blog. I'll try to late at night or in the morning. It's exciting to see these young kids come out to camp and have so much fun. It's even more exciting to hear them respond to God and His truth throughout the week.

Tom Schreiner on Women in Ministry

Dr. Thomas Schreiner wrote an excellent chapter on this subject (see here) that surveys both the Old and New Testaments. What makes his writing so powerful and persuasive is that he shows forth the true value and worth of women as it relates to ministry and, at the same time, shows the limits placed on women in the life of the church. He takes the very best arguments of egalitarians and shows why they impose a foreign teaching onto the Scriptures.

Scripture is not driving groups like the Vineyard Churches to concede the debate--culture and feminism is persuading them. It is a sad day when the culture begins to dictate the life and teachings of the church. If we hold to a high view of the Bible, then we must reject the "feminization" of our churches. We shouldn't lower the level of a women's worth to modern day feminism, but take it to it's proper level with a thoroughly Biblical and God-centered theology.

Gender Confusion: Imagine That!

I typically don't gloat in "told you so" moments, but this is one of them that I must. According to this report (link here) the Association of Vineyard Churches have now opened the door to having women pastors in their fellowships. This comes as no surprise to me, given their inception and past controversies.

I did quite a bit of research into John Wimber (pictured here) and the Vineyard movement when I first became a Christian. It was evident to me then, as it is even more now, that there is a dangerously low view of Scripture amongst many of the leaders associated with this movement. Experience and cultural influences have become powerful agents of persuasion in many of these churches. Their theology doesn't begin with God and His glory, but with man (woman) and their feelings on any given matter. This is why the so-called Toronto Blessing could be spawned from their movement. This is why the now infamous "prophetic gift" movement could come out of their movement. And now we have this.

When we reject the very clear teaching of the Bible and set up our own practices in place of them, we are walking on dangerous ground. Once we begin to compromise one issue, the temptation to compromise on others gains more and more ground. We must hold firm to a high view of Scripture and to the glorification of God in all things.

Weird Cult Uncovered!

Dressed in weirdo outfits and crazed smiles, the newest UFO cult has been uncovered. They call their new cult the Kingdom Seekers group. The "Kingdom" as they call it, is beyond the moon. According to Peter Blue Child (the official leader of the group), the moon has been hiding the Kingdom planet from the plain view of humans on earth. The goal is to blow-up the moon with nuclear devices. Once the moon is gone, they can then build a rocketship to fly to their new planet. Once on the planet they can procreate and start a new society of Kingdom Seekers.

"Who knows how many moons are hiding future Kingdoms from our view," says Linda Moonwalker, "Satan is very clever to hide our planets from our view." The New York Times has reported that there are over "100 or so Kingdom Seekers groups in the Bagdad Kentucky" alone. "There's no telling how many of these groups are really out there. Hundreds, perhaps thousands exist!"

"We seek the advancement of our Kingdom. We cannot be stopped, we will not be deterred. Opposition is futile. Our fellow Kingdom Seekers will someday rule the universe," says Clinton Venus Enus.

On a recent Oprah Winfrey show, the new cult was interviewed. Winfrey scolded one in the audience for being so narrow-minded and judgmental. "Hey, if that's their truth, then who are we to judge?" The show was abruptly ended when Linda Moonwalker attempted to eat Oprah's right ear. Oprah left the scene unhurt. The group declined to comment on the incident.

Gene Scott: My First Televangelist

I can still remember watching Gene Scott, as a kid, on late night television. He was, what you would say, a rather "unique" televangelist. He smoked cigars, cussed, demanded money from his viewers, and wrote Greek and Hebrew letters on his white board. Pretty cool stuff, as a kid, when your only other options on religious television were people with weird hair slaying each other in the spirit.

Some of his classic moments in my memory: (1) Stopping his teaching and yelling at the camera saying, "I'm not teaching until there's more money!" He then proceeded to smoke his cigar for about a half hour before picking up his teaching. (2) Riding his horse around his horse track over and over again to a Neil Diamond song. (3) Hanging out with his friends at his horse ranch--his friends just happened to be pretty young girls. He had a thing for ministering to pretty girls. (4) Playing his saxophone on stage with his tie wrapped around his head. (5) Trying to explain why Hebrew words are cooler than others.

Teaching? Doctrine? I can't remember a thing! I don't remember a thing that he ever taught on. I think that God protected me from everything that he had to say. He was just the interesting guy who smoked a cigar and talked about God. Dr. Scott passed away a few years back. Looking back now, he's the last person in the world that I would ever want to be handcuffed to when they died. Gene Scott was the perfect False Teacher--he fleeced people of their money, lived a licentious lifestyle, and taught doctrine that damns the soul.

The only thing that I respect about him is that he was typically pretty honest about his feelings on things. Also, the fact the G. Campbell Morgan was one of his favorite writers--I have no idea why he liked Morgan! Anyways, Scott is gone, but you can still have the Gene Scott Experience through his website.

Imputed Righteousness: An Alien Doctrine?

In their May 7th broadcast, Michael Horton and his guests deal with the Doctrine of Imputed Righteousness. A very eye-opening broadcast that deals with this crucial and life-changing doctrine. As they explain so eloquently, doctrine is a matter of life and death. A church that ceases to teach these important doctrines is a church that ceases to be Evangelical.

I about fell off my chair when I heard them interviewing Pastors at a recent Evangelical Pastor's Conference. 67% of those interviewed could not articulate what the doctrine is. Some of the answers were simply unbelievable.

It has reinforced my conviction that the church desperately needs sound doctrine. There is simply no excuse for churches not to be dealing with these issues on a consistent basis. Doctrine is important because God's word is important. God's word is important because God is important--we cannot separate our love for Christ with our love for his word. His word is life to us. It's His heart towards us. It is His revelation to a fallen world. Without the Doctrine of Imputation, we cease to preach the gospel.

God is the Gospel

I am finishing up John Piper's new book "God is the Gospel." Obviously, Piper didn't develop a focus group or see which way the cultural wind was blowing before he decided to write this book. He saw an important issue in the Bible and decided to write about it--pretty simple strategy. I am continually amazed by his passion for communicating the Word of God to our generation. His books are thoroughly biblical and perfectly relevant to anyone's life. Here's an insightful quote from the book concerning the importance of doctrine:

"Gospel doctrine matters because the good news is so full and rich and wonderful that it must be opened like a treasure chest, and all its treasures brought out for the enjoyment of the world. Doctrine is the description of these treasures. Doctrine describes their true value and why they are so valuable. Doctrine guards the diamonds of the gospel from being discarded as mere crystals. Doctrine protects the treasures of the gospel from the pirates who don't like the diamonds but who make their living trading them for other stones. Doctrine polishes the old gems buried at the bottom of the chest. It puts the jewels of gospel truth in order on the scarlet tapestry of history so each is seen in its most beautiful place. " (Page 22)

The thesis of the book is that God Himself is what we receive by receiving the good news of the Gospel. Eternal life is great, heaven is great, streets of gold are great, but it would all be worthless unless Christ was there to be enjoyed and worshipped. The crux of the Gospel is that we receive Him and get to enjoy Him forever. It sounds so simple but Piper lays it out in a way that can be life changing if you allow it to be.

Christian KISS?

I was lost, but now I'm found! I used to think that Christians were weird, until the day STRYKEN came to town. Now I just have bad dreams.

Notice the guy second from the right. He's got AOG written on his outfit (or perhaps he's holding up a sign or something...I don't know). I assume that stands for Assemblies of God. If my memory serves me correctly, I remember alot of weird bands, like this, coming out of the AOG churches back in the 80's. This group was hoping to ride the wave of the Stryper phenomena. Perhaps there is a connection between bad theology and bad music. Perhaps that's why there is such lousy music in most Southern Baptist churches. Perhaps it's just the connection between the 80's and music in general. Yea, I think that's probably it.

The Morels Are Here!

The first batch of morels finally came in. We harvested about 2lbs. We caught them at the their start, so we hope to get up to 10lbs. this year. They go for about $24.00 a pound dried.

Morels are rather mysterious. There is only a two week period in which they even come up. April 16 seems to be the magic date in my area. Temperature, sunshine, and moisture also seem to be important factors.

They taste absolutely great. If you're a mushroom lover, then these will certainly be at the top of your list. You can use them in any recipe that calls for mushrooms or you can just cook them up in some butter and garlic. Good stuff.

White Interacts With Caner

James White dealt with a recent Ergun Caner "sermon" in his latest Dividing Line webcast (Link Here). Craner's sermon exemplifies everything that I dislike about many preachers today. He works the crowd's emotions to a frenzy, tries to impress them with mindless "preacherisms", and thoroughly misrepresents the real issues at hand. At the end, he hypes his crowd up and leaves them to believe that he has actually dealt with the issue in a meaningful manner. If you listen to White's webcast, then you will hear the difference between meaningful interaction and shallow emotional presentations. The Arminian scholars that I respect don't do this kind of thing. Caner is much like Dave Hunt in this sermon--he uses emotionalism over reason and Biblical exegesis. His brief statement on Romans 9 is simply unbelievable. You will actually have to hear it yourself to believe it.

The webcast is informative for a couple of reasons. It gives us a preview of the debate this fall, and it highlights how ignorant many people are on the subject. Caner mixes in a little historical "hyper-Calvinism" with more mainstream Calvinism. He never tells you what the differences are between the two. He also thoroughly misrepresents what most Calvinists believe. The most grieving line was: "Calvinists don't mind stating that God is the author of sin." Anyone with even a cursory understanding of Church History or Theology know this to be false. In fact, it is exactly the opposite. If you read, for example, the Westminster Confession (which is a Calvinistic statement of faith) you will find the words, "God is NOT the author of sin." Caner does a horrendous job of representing historical Calvinism. My hopes of a meaningful debate have been shattered.

Listen to this webcast with your Bible in hand. White takes some of the hardest scriptures against Calvinism and attempts to deal with them. He does a great job of clearing up some common misunderstandings about certain key scriptures. Whether you are a Calvinist or an Arminian, you will learn a lot about what Calvinists believe and what they don't believe. Scriptures need to be studied in context and, unfortunately, this is rarely done in today's church. In issues of controversy, it is important to represent your oppenents viewpoints accurately and respectively. This was nowhere to be found in Caner's sermon. Hopefully, Caner will correct some of these things before his debate with White. If not, then it will be a frustrating night for all of those involved.

More Easter Hype

Every Easter the media seems obligated to release some "new and startling" discovery that supposedly challenges the traditional understanding of Christ. This year, the media hype is surrounding the Gospel of Judas--which, by the way, isn't new at all. I first heard about this writing in seminary, a few years back. It was even known by the church father Irenaeus. Far from being a "startling new discovery" it is actually an ancient writing known and rejected by the early church. It was recently reconstructed, but it's contents have been officially known about since the 70's.

Though no one knows who really wrote the Gospel of Judas, there are at least 3 facts that are not in dispute: (1) It was used primarily by the early gnostics (thus, it is NOT an early Christian writing, but a gnostic writing). (2) It was thoroughly rejected by the early church as being a work of fiction. And (3) was certainly not written by Judas or anyone even close to the original facts. Quite frankly, it is probably more on par with supermarket tabloids than it is with something with serious historical value. What is frustrating is how the mainstream media deals with these kinds of stories. There is little or no critical examination of what some of these fringe scholars are trying to suggest (example here).

Albert Mohler, president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, wrote an excellent article on the Gospel of Judas (Read Here). It was one of the better articles that I have read on the subject. Christians need to be prepared to defend against these kinds of stories. Many people just accept what they see in the media. But as Christians, we need to be a bit more discerning.

The Gospel of Self

Joyce Meyer has become a big name in the "word-of-faith" circles over the years. But she has also broken into the mainstream evangelical church with some of her more market-driven books. Despite being a woman pastor and a popular proponent of the "health and wealth" gospel, Meyer is a best selling author in the church at large. Her market is mainly women--typically, those who are insecure and looking for something better out of life.

This book, in particular, could have easily been written by Opray Winfrey or any other celebrity figure. The inside cover reads: "A self-esteem drought is plaguing America today, and many people find themselves in bondage to unhealthy living habits." Self-esteem and what I like to call, the Gospel of Self, has invaded just about every corner of the church. It's no longer about God and His glory, but about me and my self-esteem. The Christian market is ripe for these kinds of books and Christian publishers are all to happy to put them out. If there's a dollar to be made, then it will be made--it doesn't matter if it comes from a woman pastor or Opray, the market is always ripe for books that promise self-fulfillment, self-esteem, and success in life.

Knowing full and well that my righteousness is in Christ alone and that the sin in my heart is no better than what we see here, I am in constant prayer that the Lord would deliver me from myself. There is nothing more depressing than a self-centered life. We need to be discerning, in these times, about what we feed our souls. Does it exalt self, or does it exalt God? If we know who we are in Christ and if we know WHO HE REALLY IS--then nothing can move us. We don't need the latest self-help book, or the latest cult of personality book--we only need Christ and the knowledge of His grace and mercy towards us. May God deliver us from self!!!

James White Debates Calvinism

James White and Tom Ascol will be debating Ergun Caner and Emir Caner on the subject of Calvinism on October 16, 2006 in Lynchburg, Virginia (see here). It seems that Ergun Caner has emerged as the anti-Calvinistic pitbull of the Baptist churches. He's had some rather harsh things to say about John Piper and others who are obviously influencing Baptists across the board. It will be interesting to see if he (they) can actually back up some of their rhetoric during a formal debate.

Unfortunately, I don't have high hopes for the debate since it would seem that the subject matter will be "all over the place." Don't look for any in-depth discussion on Romans 9 or John 3:16. James White is really at his best when he goes into the actual text of scripture and forces his opponent to deal with what it (the grammar) actually states. I would highly recommend his debate with George Bryson (purchase here). During the cross-examination period Bryson was stumbling all over himself. Bryson now refuses to debate White unless the cross-examination part is taken out (imagine that).

Though I don't think that this debate will accomplish much, I do think that it might open some doors for some better dialogue on the subject. There were rumors that Albert Mohler and Paige Patterson were going to have an informal debate on the issue at the next Southern Baptist Pastor's Conference. I don't know if that will really happen, but it would be a step in the right direction.

The Morels Are Coming!

The morels are almost here! Last year, about this time, I was introduced to these delicious wonders of the natural world. They only come out for a few weeks at the beginning of April. We found a nice area to harvest them at Cedarmore Camp and Conference Center (where I also work and live). Ever since then, I have been looking forward with great anticipation to harvesting them this year as well.

After you pick these, you then clean them really good. You can cook them anyway that you want. I like to cook them in a skillet with some garlic and butter. They are very distinct tasting and have almost a "meaty" texture. If you like mushrooms, then you will certainly like these.

The Emerging Debate Unfolds

As the Emergent Church begins to defend themselves against their growing list of critics, it will be interesting to see what "dogmatics" they will come up with to defend themselves. By not wanting to take a stance on some historic doctrines like Hell, Sin, and Justification by Faith, they will undoubtedly take a stand on lesser issues. Even as we speak, the Emergent Apologists are being groomed--let's get ready to rumble!!

In summary, the Emergent Church has the following going for it: (1) A good analysis of current problems in the Evangelical Church, (2) a hunger and concern for the church and it's effectiveness in it, (3) a desire for something different than what Evangelicalism has been giving them, and (4) a concern for social issues.

They also have much going against them, such as: (1) a disdain for historic creedal and propositional understandings of doctrines, (2) an anti-Reformed sentiment, (3) a tendency to side with Liberals on important issues, (4) a theology that starts with man instead of God, (5) wishy-washy doctrinal positions that make them comfortable with Liberals, Roman Catholics and everything else under the sun, and (6) a weak understanding of the Gospel.

Simply put, the Emergent movement is dangerous to the Gospel. It exalts man over God, has a low view of Scripture, and is weak in it's understanding of the Gospel and the Church. Not everyone who identifies with the Emerging Church is guilty of this, but the leading spokesmen certainly are. Having an Orthodox statement of faith is no longer adequate in our Post Modern culture--we have to define our terms and come to certain conclusions. Don't be swayed by a good statement of faith--it can mean anything a Post Modern wants it to mean. Brian McLaren will swear up and down that he affirms the historic doctrines of the church, but it simply doesn't hold true once he is pressed on it. Be wise and discerning with this movement.

Emerging Liberalism Part Four

As the old saying goes, "You are what you eat." If that is true in the physical sense, then I suppose the Emerging Church is in the intellectual and spiritual sense taking in a healthy dose of Liberalism from their favorite books (See some of McLaren's recommended books here). You can learn a lot about a movement by looking at what they enjoy reading. His reading list is like the "Who's Who" of liberal and postmodern thought. Guilt by association isn't always a logical fallacy, if you see a pattern developing in their reading and theology. The pattern in these books leads one to believe that they really despise theology that is definite, sure, and dogmatic.

From looking at the various websites promoting the Emergent Church, I see the same books popping up over and over again. They are always similar in subject matter and scope. Words like "postmodern", "rethinking theology", "emergent faith", "social justice", "Christian conversations", etc., keep coming up. Many of these buzz words are also found on various openly liberal websites promoting everything from homosexual Christians, to denouncing the Bible as evil and irrelevant. I wonder what would actually happen if they were to have a "conversation" with some of these openly liberal Christians? Would they earnestly defend THE faith, or would they concede important doctrines on the shrine of "love".

There is a Five Views book on the subject of the Emergent Church (Look Here). Michael Horton, from Westminster Theological Seminary, makes a contribution to this debate book, so it should be a good book on the subject. In my next post, I will attempt to summarize what I have discovered about the movement and give some final thoughts on the matter.

Emerging Liberalism Part Three

Scholar and theologian, N.T. Wright, has emerged as a favorite writer of folks like Brian McLaren and others who identify with the Emerging Church Movement. Who is N.T. Wright? He is a respected Evangelical scholar from England who has written and spoken quite eloquently in defense of the Christian faith, particularly against the attacks from the now infamous Jesus Seminar.

Wright has also espoused a new way of looking at some of Paul's writings called New Perspectivism. Simply put, it challenges some of the Historic Reformation teachings on such doctrines as, Justification by Faith, Imputed Righteousness, and first century Judaic Legalism. According to Wright, Justification by Faith should not be included (or apart of) Soteriology (the study of salvation). He believes that we have largely misunderstood Paul's writings against the Judaizers and have wrongly applied the concept of "Justification by Works" to the Jews of that day. Justification is not "a legal act" that gives us peace with God, but is a "covenantal sign" of our ecclesiastical belonging. In other words, we are not immediately made Righteous in God's sight (through an act of Justification) but are actually Justified (to other Christians) by our common faith in Christ.

This is, as Phil Johnson states in his fine essay on this subject, a pretty "audacious claim." (Download Johnson's Essay Here). Have Christian commentators been wrong about this all along? Was Luther wrong? Was Calvin wrong? Has N.T. Wright finally discovered what no other theologian has seen? Wright claims that this new understanding can actually unite Catholics and Protestants---it should not be used to divide them.

Why does McLaren speak at conferences with evangelicals, liberals, and even Roman Catholics? I don't know if it is a direct application of Wright's teaching, but it is part of the same spirit. When we become theologically "fuzzy" in our understanding of such essential truths, we lose our sense of direction and purpose in the church. Justification by Faith is at the very heart of the Gospel. To discard it would be disastrous.

Why Theology Matters

Why should we care about the study of theology? The doctrines that we believe can either damn us or save us, free us or enslave us. Theology matters, because God matters. We need to love and worship God in both spirit and in truth. Since theology seeks to know God for who He really is and what He wants to communicate to us--it is of the highest importance.

We don't study theology to become a connoisseur of theology. We study theology to (1) know the true and living God for who He is and to think right thoughts about Him, and (2) to learn to worship and serve Him better. If my study of theology doesn't lead me to love and adore Him more, then I am doing it for all the wrong reasons.

My heart breaks for those who get "tossed to and fro" by every new wind of doctrine. It can happen to any of us. However, if we exalt the Word of God to mean just that--God's very WORDS to us, then we can't go too wrong. If you love God, then you love His word. You cannot separate the two.

Emerging Liberalism Part Two

Brian McLaren has "emerged" as the spokesman for the Emergent Church movement. He is articulate, likeable, and the most theological savvy of the group. He has years of experience as a pastor and his pastoral spirit really comes across when he speaks. He is a gentle man, always patient with those he speaks with.

McLaren rightly sees many problems in the contemporary Evangelical church--such as: (1) Fundamentalism, (2) a market-driven church expressed in many of the mega-churches, (3) professed believers who don't act different from the world, (4) lack of interest in social issues, (5) and a lack of generosity amongst differing theological traditions. There are more issues that trouble him, but these will suffice our considerations here. What he doesn't share as much, however, is his disdain for certain historical doctrines.

One of these "unfortunate" doctrines is the churches historical understanding of hell. The idea of a God who hates and punishes sin makes McLaren feel uncomfortable. You can hear him being interviewed on this blog site about this particular issue: www.bleedingpurplepodcast.blogspot.com. Like Robert Schuller and other liberals before him, he claims to hold to all of the historical creeds of the church, but at the same time refuses to affirm those very doctrines in his teachings. This interview is very helpful in understanding McLaren (Kudos to Josh Martin for finding it). He is being interviewed, here, by a very open liberal who seems to like McLaren very much. Unfortunately, McLaren feels right at home as well.

One of the "disarming tactics" that McLaren uses is to insist that we discuss theological issues in non Left and Right terms. In other words, don't accuse him of being a liberal on any given viewpoint. Once people start using that term on him, then his goose is cooked. He knows that better than anybody. You see, liberals know what they are teaching corresponds with liberalism, but they want you to look at the issues in a "fresh" way--we need to get rid of our "traditions" and think through the issues again.

My first impression of McLaren is that he lets his "feelings" and pastoral experience dictate his theology. He's heard all of the arguments against God before. The Doctrine of Hell is right there at the top of any critics list. In his need to "justify" God, he now feels the need to water down this particular doctrine. This demonstrates his very low view of Scripture. He's allowing his own feelings and thoughts to override what the Bible clearly teaches. Once you rationalize one doctrine away, it becomes easier to do so with others. In my next post, we will look at some of those other doctrines.

Emerging Liberalism Part One

I first heard Brian McLaren speak at a conference in Atlanta. He was one of the few speakers, there, that left an impression on me. He was thoughtful and passionate about what he talked about. He didn't turn on his "dynamic speaker" switch or push his "I am a preacher" button--he simply spoke from his heart. Though I had some reservations about some of the things that he said, I was determined not to come to a judgment about him until I read more from him.

I had almost put him out of my mind until the day that I heard that he was "disinvited" from speaking at the Kentucky Baptist Convention's Evangelism Conference in the Spring of 2005. Critical articles expressing concerns for his theology began to spring up (One Example Here). People began to openly ask, "Is he that bad...I've heard such great things about him?" Little did I know at the time just how far off he really was. My next series of posts will be dealing with the teachings of this now controversial teacher. I think that by examining his theology and thought, we can learn a lot about the subtle dangers of Liberalism and why a man-centered theology simply doesn't work. More to come later.

Jesus the Socialist?

I remember it like it was yesterday. My senior year at Ball State University and my last English course that I needed to complete my English degree. My professor (who was a liberal...imagine that!) sat calmly in her desk chair and uttered these words: "I think that Jesus...now I don't want to get struck with a lightening bolt for saying this...was the first real Communist."

After waiting a few seconds (to allow God the opportunity), I very enthusiastically spoke up in His defense. I simply pointed out her misunderstanding of the Book of Acts and that the "sharing of goods amongst the brethren" was simply that--the early church helping each other out. This was not meant to be applied to government, or a socialist system. Also, I pointed out to her the repeated terminology of Jesus, in the Scriptures, as the reigning King of Kings and Lord of Lords. A Monarchy would be more accurate in respect to Christ.

After gently, but firmly correcting her, one of the other students spoke up. He was known as the "anti-Christian" of the class. He had been very outspoken, in some of the other classes, about how he despised Christianity and how he thought it was a total waste of time. He was always very quick to speak up on the subject of Christ and Christianity. After struggling a bit with his choice of words, he stated that "Christ was to be respected" and "understood as someone truly great". There seemed to be something different in his voice--he seemed to be struggling with something.

At church, the week before, I had specifically prayed for him with the church. The whole church lifted him up and I asked that the Lord would reveal Himself to him. When we were praying, his face just came to my mind. I didn't think much of it at the time, until he said that in my class.

It was one of those "holy moments" for me. Not only did God give me the boldness and calmness to speak up that day, but He also seemed to be dealing with a hardened critic.

Their faculty lectures on the Emergent Church Movement are excellent. Every semester they tackle a new issue or look at an important doctrine.

The Emergent Church Movement is an important issue to learn about. There is much about the movement, on the surface at least, that is attractive. However, when you really look at the core issues, it's nothing but Liberalism repackaged. These lectures do a great job of getting into the minds of the proponents of this movement. If there are other good resources out there, on the issue, then please let me know about them.

Clinton Vs. McCain

The 2008 Presidential race seems to be shaping up quickly. John McCain is coming out as the likely Republican favorite, while Hillary Clinton is emerging as the Democrat front-runner. Of course, much could (and will) change between now and then, but this scenario seems quite plausible. You can read about it here (2008).

In a heads up matchup, McCain would easily prevail. However, he has two major problems: (1) Age, and (2) shaky support amongst Conservative Republicans. Most are polite enough to not make his age an issue, but it will be, in my opinion, an issue nonetheless. The Conservative thing is serious but can easily be overcome. After all, McCain is pro-life, strong on defense, and has recently voted to extend some of Bush's tax-cuts. If he can successfully make his case to the Conservatives, then I believe that they will back him.

Hillary has one major problem--the people that don't like her, REALLY don't like her. Even worse, is the fact that almost half of the electorate already has made up their mind that they will NOT vote for her (around 47% in another poll that I read). She inflames passions by the mere mention of her name. This is a serious, and perhaps, fatal blow to her ambitions. It will be interesting to watch how it all unfolds.

Hodge on Justification

A classic work on Justification by Faith. Charles Hodge, the great Princeton scholar and theologian of the 19th century, lays out a very clear presentation of this important doctrine (Book Here). Both doctrinal and practical--I've used this book to witness to Mormons and others who struggle with Justification.

The understanding of this doctrine seems to be at the very heart of mankind's dilemma before God. It has been rightly said that this doctrine separates all religions into two distinct categories: (1) Those that seek to be justified by works and (2) those who seek to be justified by grace and faith. The "narrow road" of Justification by Faith is clearly in the minority, while those religious systems that seek to set works as our means of being justified before God is the "broader road" of the world. Having grown-up Roman Catholic, this doctrine is very important to me. It brings clarity to our lives and gives a sure foundation for our Christian faith.

Imputed Righteousness and Justification

Thrilled to see this article online concerning the great doctrine of Justification by Faith (Article Here). John Piper and Justin Taylor do an excellent job of not only laying out the doctrine Biblically, but also applies it practically as well.

Perhaps one of the greatest scandals in the Evangelical Church today is that this subject is rarely or never taught on. With all of the fad books floating around, it's refreshing to see some modern pastors and theologians actually publishing on these vital topics. Many of Piper's books have been best sellers, so there must be a hunger out there for more doctrinally drenched books.

I would also like to highly recommend John Piper's new DVD entitled, "When I Don't Desire God: How to Fight for Joy." You can purchase it here (DVD). The one thing that I have always appreciated about Piper's ministry is that he keeps his costs low on his resources. He will even work with those who can't afford the cost of any given resource. Freely He gave to us, freely we should give to others.
